What are students learning?
This unit is broken down into 4 parts. Each part includes a lesson plan of activities. The following is the breakdown of the unit:
- Part 1 – Introduction to Rock Layers and Fossils: Students will go through the Guided Lesson Slide Deck, complete a reading comprehension passage about Changes in Landscape, and complete a hands-on science lab (rock layers).
- Part 2 – Paleontologists: Students will learn more about paleontologists by completing a reading passage about those scientists. Then they will complete a hands-on science lab (fossil layers lab). They will review all they have learned so far by playing games with the task cards.
- Part 3 – Digging into Fossils: Students will learn more about fossils by reading a Fossils and La Brea Tar Pits reading passage and comprehension. Then they will review by completing a flipbook. You may display the flipbook on bulletin boards.
- Part 4: Fossil Tool Stem Challenge: Students will take everything they have learned about rock layers and fossils and apply them in this cumulative project. This project is a Fossil Tool STEM Challenge. Students will go through the engineering design process as they work to design a tool that can help them dig up fossils with 2 different purposes.
