What are students learning?
This unit is broken down into 4 parts. Each part includes a lesson plan of activities. The following is the breakdown of the unit:
- Part 1 – Introduction to Waves: Students will get an introduction to waves by going through the guided lesson, reading about human senses, and completing a play task card games to review Properties of Light.
- Part 2 – Sound Waves: Students will learn more in-depth about sound waves. After the guided lesson, students will complete a sound waves reading comprehension, and a hands-on science center (Sound Waves Lab). Then they will show their learning with the sound waves flipbook. This flipbook can be displayed on bulletin boards.
- Part 3 – Light Waves: Students will be more focused on light waves in this part. They will learn with the guided lesson and then complete a light waves reading comprehension passage. Then students will complete 2 light centers (light reflection lab and a refraction lab). Students can complete the flipbook they started in the sound waves part.
- Part 4 – Musical Instrument Stem Challenge: Students will take everything they have learned about light and sound waves and apply them in this cumulative project. This project is a Musical Instrument STEM Challenge. Students will go through the engineering design process as they work through the problem of creating musical instruments that they can use to produce music.
