What are students learning?
This unit is broken down into 4 parts. Each part includes a lesson plan of activities. The following is the breakdown of the unit:
- Part 1 – Changes in the Earth’s Landscape: Students will get an introduction to changes in Earth’s landscape by going through the guided lesson, reading about geologists, and completing an engaging learning experience with a WebQuest.
- Part 2 – Weathering: Students will learn more in-depth about weathering. After the guided lesson, students will complete a weathering reading comprehension, and a hands-on science center (Weathering Lab). Then they will show their learning with a weathering, erosion, and deposition flipbook. This flipbook can be displayed on bulletin boards.
- Part 3 – Erosions & Deposition: Students will be more focused on erosions and deposition in this part. They will learn with the guided lesson and then complete an erosion and sand dune reading comprehension passage. They can review the concepts with the weathering and erosions task cards.
- Part 4 – Sand Castle Stem Challenge: Students will take everything they have learned about weathering erosions and deposition and apply them in this cumulative project. This project is a Sand Castle STEM Challenge. Students will go through the engineering design process as they work through the problem of creating barriers in sand to keep the water from weathering the castle.
